The Importance of High Protein, Low Carb Snacks
With most of us living such busy lifestyles, snacking has become an integral part of our daily routines. However, the quality of snacks we choose can have a massive impact on our overall health and wellness. Some of my clients find their snacks make up to 30-40% of the food they eat in a day! If one isn’t being mindful about these seemingly small bites here and there, they can easily derail your efforts.
High protein, low carb snacks are increasingly gaining popularity as they offer a balanced approach to satisfying hunger while keeping glucose in check. These snacks are particularly beneficial for those looking to maintain a healthy weight, support muscle growth, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of a snack that keeps them satisfied.
Benefits of High-Protein, Low-Carb Snacks
Promote Satiety: Protein triggers hormones that signal fullness, helping to reduce overeating.
Stabilize Blood Sugar: Avoid the rollercoaster of spikes and crashes from sugary snacks.
Support Weight Management: Protein’s thermic effect boosts metabolism, while keeping carbs low help prevent fat storage from excess glucose.
Enhance Muscle Recovery: Whether you’re working out or managing daily stress, protein repairs and rebuilds tissues for optimal function.
Protein plays a vital role in our bodies; it aids in building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting immune function. When combined with low carbohydrates, these snacks help to stabilize blood sugar levels, keeping energy levels consistent throughout the day. This balance helps to prevent the spikes and crashes associated with high-carb snacks, which often lead to feelings of fatigue and irritability. By choosing high protein, low carb options, you can help promote satiety and reduce the likelihood of overeating at meal times.
Moreover, the benefits of high protein, low carb snacks extend beyond immediate hunger satisfaction. They can also play a crucial role in weight management. High protein intake has been linked to increased feelings of fullness, which can lead to a natural reduction in calorie intake. This is particularly beneficial for those looking to drop a few dress sizes without feeling like they are starving!
By incorporating these snacks into your daily routine, you can satisfy cravings while supporting your health and fitness goals, making it much easier to resist unhealthy options that are seemingly everywhere.
Choosing the Best High-Protein, Low-Carb Snacks
When selecting snacks, aim for those with at least 10g of protein and fewer than 10g of total carbs per serving. This balance provides enough protein to curb hunger while keeping carbs low enough to maintain blood sugar stability.
Beware of the “Net Carbs” Myth
Net carbs are calculated by subtracting fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbs. While this sounds appealing, it’s not always accurate.
If you look at the label of many low carbohydrate products, you’ll notice total carbs can be quite high! Many manufacturers ‘stuff’ their products with lab created fibers which can then legally be used to lower the Net Carb total. The catch is – some of these lab-created fibers (like isomalto-oligosaccharides) can be digested by some individuals, leading to as severe a spike in glucose as any regular high carbohydrate treat! I’ve had many clients wearing CGMs come back and report that keto brownies or chips or tortillas are actually wreaking havoc on their blood sugar. Not all products affect all individuals the same way, so wearing a CGM is really the best way to determine if some of these foods are more harm than help. If you don’t qualify for a CGM and find them too costly, staying away from keto-friendly low carb treats is your best bet.
Additionally, many sugar alcohols—like erythritol and sorbitol—can cause gastrointestinal distress, including bloating and diarrhea, and some also still impact blood sugar levels. Focus on total carbs for a more reliable measure and to avoid unpleasant surprises!
