No one can deny that food costs are rising, and sourcing quality protein that is also affordable is a tall order. Seafood is one of the most nutrient-dense options available to us, and while fresh is delightful and delicious, it isn’t always accessible!
Despite living in coastal areas most of my life, the majority of my seafood comes from cans. This is, in part, due to the fact that I am more unfamiliar with cooking seafood than I am other proteins. Additionally, I have fickle tastes and can buy a piece of halibut or salmon that looks amazing in the moment, but then feel like chicken by time dinner comes along.
The best answer to all of this is canned seafood. It’s easy to toss in salads to boost protein and nutrients, and I also make a wickedly tasty seafood dip that is a regular feature in my kitchen.
Vital Choice Seafoods remains my favorite source for canned salmon. I love that they are sustainable, that they can sockeye salmon (!) and that they ship directly to my home. They also sell canned salmon with the bone, a hard-to-find protein source which easily boosts calcium intake from dairy-fre sources.
When it comes to oysters, no one beats Crown Prince. They have a canned oyster option using olive oil, and these oysters are firm, tasty, and don’t overdeliver in the smokiness department. They are great as a standalone snack on crackers, eaten straight out of the can, or incorporated into that tasty seafood dip I mentioned earlier.
